While this update addresses one of the biggest single complaints about the PS5 game, it notably didn't modify the game's difficulty and RNG's role in successful Returnal runs. Like photo modes in other modern games, different filters can be layered into shots, the camera angle and aperture can be adjusted, and more. Based on Housemarque's samples, it seems Returnal's photo mode will work well in the hauntingly beautiful landscapes of Atropos. This update also adds a photo mode to Returnal, and it can be activate at any time besides first-person cutscenes. Returnal’s run suspension is not treated like a traditional save point, as resuming a run deletes the suspension point until a new one is created. Kreuger says this will protect Returnal's " roguelike spirit” while still giving players the option for shorter bursts of play. It's not yet clear if players will feel the same way. Run suspensions now allow Returnal players to save their current run even if they switch to another PS5 game or turn off their consoles. However, director Harry Kreuger also announced some caveats for the new feature in a PlayStation Blog post, as runs cannot be suspended during first-person sequences, cinematics, boss battles, or " intense combat." Krueger says these restrictions prevent those moments in Returnal from being “ fragmented," as dropping players back into gameplay during those moments would break their flow. On developer Housemarque's blog, Returnal update 2.0 and its changes were revealed, with the most important one being the introduction of a run suspension feature. However, there was some hesitations about using rest mode, as the console feature was notoriously buggy and could potentially brick the entire system. Quickly, players figured out how to pause the game using the PS5’s rest mode feature. Though Housemarque made it clear it was aware of suspension-concerned criticisms, the developer implied it was unsure if enough Returnal players wanted autosaves to address it immediately after release. Returnal players' inability to pause runs was a hot topic at release, though some didn’t mind the lack of mid-run saves as much as the game's lack of difficulty options.
While similar games like Hades and Dead Cells have similar live-die-repeat gameplay loops, these games had something the PS5 game did not - the ability to pause a run and return to them at will. Returnal is a roguelike, meaning each time the player dies, they return to the game's starting area. PlayStation 5-exlusive game Returnal's has been updated by newly acquired PlayStation studio Housemarque, finally adding a highly requested feature allowing players to suspend runs and resume them later.
